Classic autos usually are the ones that usually are in the very first 1 / 2 of the 20th century and also only those that are likewise hugely valuable from the muscle car age in addition to some of the more unconventional late model cars. Classic cars are often seen as works of fine art in contrast to a high-end hobby. This is the reason why you’ll need to keep in mind that they are not economical to restore and care for. A classic car can certainly often cost a lot more to restore that the car ends up becoming valued at.

Collector vintage cars and trucks are desirable for plenty of reasons. Classic cars and trucks captivate people with their scarcity, attractiveness, and intelligent designs. Taking into consideration the thoughts that specific classic cars evoke, consumers adore them. An old car usually takes them to a happier point in time in their life. Therefore they’re valuable to our society for both nostalgia along with investment objectives.

Car dealers or consumers often specialize in exclusive makes and models of classic vehicles that attract them. Classic cars can even be modern day favorites too. Oftentimes they’re modified automobiles or trucks that are famous for their own quirky personality. A classic car or truck is apparent to almost all when individuals observe one, however it really is challenging for collectors to determine what the particular expression genuinely signifies. It could indicate different thoughts to different people.

Classic auto lovers usually require deep wallets to buy vehicles in which they will rarely utilize, nevertheless, you will nonetheless come across the average joe which has scraped together money to buy that unique automobile they always wanted or used to have.

These days, car donation has been gaining popularity with a number of people especially among Americans. With this, many people are on a search for the right steps that they have to do in donating their cars. Finding the right procedures will help people decide in donating their vehicles.

The very first step to car donation is to find out the right institutions that would accept car donation directly. This means that the car donation pledges will be the one to give the car directly without any intermediating organizations. The reason for this is that their services may get you more cost that what you expect. With this, they have to find an organization that will process the car donation on their own.

Second is to research well about the charities which support such car donation programs and find out more if they hold a dependable credibility. The track record of the charity of your choice should all be registered and if possible have online records at the online site of the Better Business Bureau through the help of the Charity Navigator.

Third is that if you are really too busy, then you can check the computations of how much the service of a middleman would cause you. Just be sure to ask the charitable organization of how much of the car’s value would go to them. Hence, if the charity assigns some flat fees, then your car donation may not be approved for some tax deductions.

Fourth is that you must be assured that the charitable group has documents showing that they are IRS approved! To double check on this, you can simply visit the IRS website.

When it comes to the charity group, you must be able to assure yourself too that they are qualified to receive car donations and they should be listed in the IRS document listings. If your charity organization happens to be a church, then you must see some other exemptions included in the IRS publications.

You will only be allowed to deduct the whole fair market value of the car if the charitable institution gives it to someone needy or sells it on their prerogative. Another is that if they use the car donation for their organization’s activities. The market value cannot be declared if the charity sells the car for the purpose of using it as cash.

To be formally eligible for the tax deduction out of car donation, you must make sure that you hold all the proper documents you need to serve as proof like a written acknowledgement. This could be done in either paper or electronic form. Hence, it could truly help a lot if you would choose a charitable group which would use your car donation for their activities or give it to the needy ones.

There is many car donationprograms that are very helpful to charity. Why don’t you donate a car to a charity program rather than trying to sell it for a few hundred dollars.

The majority of automotive industry experts regard today’s used cars as being far more trustworthy and reliable than those sold 20 or more years ago. For example, rust and exhaust issues were a recurring problem on used cars 20 to 30 years ago, but these issues are rarely reported today. Furthermore, all Utah County Auto certified cars and trucks receive a 3000 mile or 30 day warranty.

There are plenty of families that would like to purchase a new vehicle with all the extras, but the prices are just too high to manage on a budget. Buying a used car or truck from Utah County Auto is an excellent way to get a fully equipped auto with all the bells and whistles you could possibly want at a fraction of the cost. Late model vehicles will also have most of the better safety features installed for your family’s peace of mind and safety.

A buyer’s guide is required to be posted in every used vehicle on a dealer’s lot according to the Federal Trade Commission. This was designed to offer some measure of protection for the consumer; however, at Utah County Auto only the finest automobiles are offered for sale, and each must pass a rigorous 127 point inspection before they are allowed to be sold.

One advantage to buying a used vehicle is that there are numerous reviews and reports online about the reliability of a particular model you may be interested in. Consumers will rate their opinion of any vehicle they have purchased, and it will help you decide to buy if most of the reports seem favorable. Utah County Auto will stand behind its used cars and will bend over backwards to be sure you are happy with your purchase.

So, before buying a used car, check with the U. S. Department of Transportation’s toll free Vehicle Safety Hotline for defects and recalls.

There are numerous people nowadays who want to think of ways to dispose of their old cars. This is sometimes due to people purchasing a new car and simply don’t require the other one. Hence, they think of ways to dispose of their old unused cars. People don’t want the old car in their own garage because it’s such a huge waste.

With this, many people turn to car donation as the best way to make their cars useful for others especially since it is for charity. They would like to find the right charitable institutions where they can donate a car. The only problem is that majority of people are still clueless on how to donate car to organizations so they get help from donate car programs.

It is also recommended that they take a closer look at “donate a car” program that they will get involved with. These programs have one aim which is giving assistance to people who want to donate cars. But if you happen to end up with the wrong program, then you might end up unfulfilled with the whole car donation experience.

You must make sure the donate a car program you will settle for will be capable of giving the best kind of value to the charitable institution. Steer away from those who prioritize themselves first instead of prioritizing the benefit of the charity.

If the program that you find will not give the proper value to charity then you may want to just donate the car on your own. What you need to do is look for the right institution where you can donate your car and then process the needed documents.

After you find the right institution to donate your car too, then you just need to process the needed documents in order to transfer the vehicle. In this way, the car will be owned by the institution instead of just being left on your name.

If you experience difficulties with the process or if questions will arise about tax issues, you can just contact the IRS office for assistance. Aside from this, you can also log on to their website for more information as they have answers to frequently asked questions concerning taxing.

If you want to donate your car, it is not impossible to do everything on your own. Nevertheless, if you want to ask assistance from some third party groups, you just need to take your time to research their background more closely and make sure that your donation won’t be wasted.

Are your’re considering how to donate a car if so check out 1800cardonations.org. They have a car donation program that may suit you’re requirement.

There are so many GPS systems out developed by the top manufacturers, so it is possible to find Cheap GPS systems. When looking for an inexpensive system, you will want to look for one that doesn’t have all the useless gadgets. Some people find that the text to speech is extremely important, but the truth is it isn’t.

The good news for you is that competition is getting very heavy right now for the top companies so in order to be able to keep up they need to lower their prices. Right now, there is no best brand, but in this article we will be going over the top brands cheapest products.

Garmin

One thing that makes the Garmin so popular is it’s interface. It is probably the easiest interface to use and navigate. If you want to purchase a Garmin it is recommended you check out the Nuvi 250 series. Even though this series is becoming a bit out dated it will still get you from point A to point B. However, rumor has it that they are going to be producing a new series for the same price. The best thing about Garmins is they have a lot of POI’s (Points of Interest)

Lowrance

The Lowrance company has always been known to create some good, low priced GPS systems. The interface on Lowrance systems are easy to use as well, but they don’t look as good as the Garmins. The only downside is the batter life is short compared it it’s competition.

Magellan

Magellan has been called “The King of GPS Systems” for a reason. They offer great, cheap GPS systems. If you are certain you want to go with a Magellan you need to check out the Roadmap series. This series has a very cool built in text to speech ability.

Each company has great Cheap GPS Systems.

There are times in life where driving can become extremely stressful because you get lost. One thing is sure though, if you have a GPS with you, you will never get lost. In this article, we are going to be going over exactly what you need in GPS systems for cars so you don’t waste your money on things you don’t need.

Display

The first thing you should be looking at is the size of the screen. If the screen is to small you are going to have to look really hard to see where you are going. Most people agree that the optimal screen size is about six inches.

Maps

After you find a system that has the screen size you like, you need to take a look at its map coverage. You will need one that covers all of North America, and you might want to consider one that covers Canada if you will be traveling a lot. Look for a GPS system that has a USB plug that will allow you to upload maps from your computer.

Directional

Having your GPS system actually talk to you is probably the best way to get directions, it sure beats having to constantly look at the map. Almost all systems have a built speech, but some of the more pricey systems have built in text to speech. When the system has built in text to speech capability, you will actually be told what street to turn on rather than just hearing “turn right in 500 feet”.

Design

You need to choose a design that you like, there is no right or wrong for this. But if you find yourself driving different cars often, it is important to get one that allows you to switch from one car to another easily.

There are so many GPS Systems For Cars around today.

Folks recently have been able to find a great deal more old GMC trucks for sale than ever before. It depends on how you define “old”, or as some call “classic” trucks, an older GMC truck is hard to beat.

When you are shopping around for a used classic pickup, ordinarily the best place to go is to your community newspaper classifieds. The truth is that this is where you will be able to come across the vehicles that are especially near to your home, but this is fast becoming an outdated method for finding classic trucks for sale. Nowadays, the web is the way to go in your search to find local used vehicles for sale.

Of course, I highly advise my own classic car classifieds website, Buy Old Cars.com, but there are a lot of other places on the Internet to uncover that unusual classic you’ve been hunting for. Amongst the various places include eBay motors, Craig’s list, and a whole host of other classic car websites.

When seeking a classic truck on the Internet, just be mindful of the reality that not everything is factual on the Web. You need to do your research. Get a feel for the collectors who are saying they are selling a particular vehicle. In no way send money to transport a car or truck without looking at it. Go see the truck in person. Just be smart.

Keep in mind that GMC trucks can be found everywhere. General Motors is the second largest truck maker in the world. GMC has innovated in the area of engineering the best trucks in the industry. The quality of trucks that have come out of GMC have been phenomenal.

An old classic GMC truck is no different in terms of excellence. Consumers who buy those old trucks are not easily swayed by other kinds of trucks. From the front fender to the back tailgate, the value is there! Buy a classic GMC truck through the web!

Find a 1971 GMC Ton Pickup For Sale – Rare Toolbox Model for sale at BuyOldCars Classic Car Classifieds

One of the most annoying things you can go through in life is being lost while driving and having no idea where to go. Back in the day, if you found yourself lost while driving somewhere you would have to take out the map in order to find your way. Remember how hard that was?

Thankfully, technology got better and we have now developed GPS systems. But which GPS system is the best? That question seems to keep getting asked, so we decided to research it and we have discovered something.. The best system is the Magellan GPS System.

Right now, we have twenty four GPS satellites circling the globe providing us with direction down to the nearest foot. These systems use to only be available for military reasons but technology has developed enough to allow us to use them in our every day lives.

If you look at the new cars out there, you will notice that almost all of them come with a built in GPS. This is great news for those of you that can afford a car with one. However, money is tight so we need to find a portable GPS system for you

One key benefit we found with the Magellan GPS systems is that they have a great choice of portable ones that you can take anywhere. You can’t do that with the ones built into a car.

Magellan also makes a series of hand held GPS systems in case you love the outdoors and want to go on a hike. You won’t ever have to worry about getting lost in the woods if you have a hand held GPS with you. Also, for those of you that love to go shopping, this can come in handy if you go shop in a mall you aren’t familiar with. Just plug in the name of the store and you will be able to locate it within seconds.

Do you remember back in the day when maps were actually used? Isn’t it funny that when a person thinks of a map now they see it as an “old school” way of getting to where you want to get? GPS systems (Global position systems) seem to have taken over. In this article, we are going to help you find the Best GPS system for you and your family. By the time you are doing reading this article you will know exactly what to look for in a GPS system and whether or not it is worth the money.

So what is so special about GPS systems? The cool thing about these systems is they do much more than just give you directions from one point to another. They will show you the fastest route, find the cheapest gas near you, and even show you where the best entertainment is. Some of the new systems have a built in text to speech capability, this means they can actually tell you what road to turn down so you don’t need to look at it. This is a much safer form of driving because you get to focus on the road and not the system.

The best part about getting a GPS system is that once purchased, you don’t need to buy another one because you will get updates for the rest of your life.

We don't envy the designers who pen bikes for the likes of Triumph or Harley-Davidson. Machines like the Bonneville and Sportster are inherently popular for their nostalgic looks, and die-hard fans are the first to cry foul when the bikes wander too far from the original recipe. As the Triumph Bonneville Speed Twin Concept elegantly illustrates, that's a crying shame. As the brainchild of English designers Roy Norton and Tom Kasher, the Speed Twin is a modern take on the classic Bonneville. The two started with a Bonnie as a base platform and proceeded to update the machine's aesthetics accordingly.

The conceit began with the simple notion of what the Bonneville could have evolved into were it not so saddled with the nostalgia millstone. The two contacted Triumph while working for a design studio shortly after college, and Triumph Product Manager Simon Warburton gave the concept the go-ahead. The result is what you see here.

The concept uses a heavily modified Bonneville frame in conjunction with muscular-looking girder forks. Barbour cloth covers both the seats and the grips. With an 865cc engine, Thruxton brakes and unique gauges and levers, the Speed Twin is distilled awesome. Warburton is apparently pleased with the final result as well, and says some of the elements may make their way to future Triumph models. Head over to BikeExif for the full story.
Triumph Bonneville Speed Twin Concept is what two-wheel dreams are made of originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 16:13:00 EST.

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show, Concept Cars, Hatchback, Kia, Design/Style

Kia has officially dropped new teaser for its Chicago-bound Track'Ster concept. Word has it the new hatch will be based largely on the company's Soul five-door, though with a few notable tweaks. For starters, designers scrapped the rear doors for more of a hot hatch look. A new front fascia looks to be part of the recipe as well, and odds are the Track'Ster will rock suitably outrageous wheels befitting a true concept.

But will it come to production? It's hard telling. As you may recall, the Soul has been a go-to favorite as a concept platform in the past. Kia showed off the beach-going Soul'ster concept at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, and while the vehicle generated enormous buzz, the economic slowdown put a stop to any production plans. Still, with corporate cousin Hyundai rocking the Veloster, there may be room in the Kia stable for a performance hatch.

The Track'Ster Concept will make its official debut later this week.
Kia releases second Track'Ster teaser ahead of Chicago debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 13:01:00 EST.
Nissan is headed to the Geneva Motor Show in March with a brand new hatchback concept. Called Invitation, this five-door should give us an idea of what the Japanese manufacturer has planned for its next B-segment contender. The concept borrows a bit from the likes of the Honda Fit, though that's no bad thing. With a clean, athletic design, the Invitation is a refreshing break from some of the automaker's more questionable exteriors.

Nissan hasn't divulged any drivetrain details as of yet, though the company has said each of the Invitation derivatives will be eligible to wear the company's Pure Drive badge. That means the production-version Invitation will be among the most efficient and economical vehicles Nissan produces. We do know the hatch will boast the ever-cool around-view monitor system along with a full slate of tech goodies. Hit the jump for the full press release and be sure to keep an eye open for our Geneva show coverage of the concept's official unveiling.
Continue reading Nissan Invitation Concept peeks out ahead of Geneva debut [w/video]

Nissan Invitation Concept peeks out ahead of Geneva debut [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 10:01:00 EST.
The Suzuki Regina concept shown at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show was an unusual little car. We don't want to get our hopes up about production (especially since we'd probably never get it in America anyway), but the Regina will return to the spotlight at the Geneva Motor Show with some tweaks that have us wondering if Suzuki plans to actually build the French-looking runabout. Despite its bold styling, the Regina's drivetrain seems plausible enough; it's powered by a conventional three-cylinder gasoline engine.

The Regina will apparently be renamed G70 when it's shown in Switzerland. Tokyo publicity for the car centered around the five-door as "an idea for a 1,600-pound sedan that gets 75 miles per gallon." Suzuki has officially pegged the weight of the G70 at 730 kg, or 1,606 pounds. The "70" in the name likely comes from its 70g/km of carbon emissions, but Suzuki hasn't divulged its numbers yet. Follow the jump for a press release on the G70 concept.
Continue reading Suzuki Regina concept renamed G70, production version coming?

Suzuki Regina concept renamed G70, production version coming? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 04 Feb 2012 19:01:00 EST.
Infiniti has named its electric concept car headed for next month's Geneva Motor Show the EMERG-E. The company says that its showcar will be a coupe powered by a 1.2-liter gasoline engine with a range-extending electric motor. The powerplant will be mounted amidships for superior weight distribution, and the Japanese automaker promises the concept will offer impressive performance.

Infiniti has released very few details beyond saying the car's pure-electric range will be "respectable." The vehicle also promises zero-emission driving in most urban settings, so there's a good chance the concept will show off some advanced charging tech as well. The automaker is intent on making us wait until the vehicle's full unveil in Geneva before it drops any more clues, though a few more teaser images have surfaced to whet our appetite. Check them out in our gallery below.
Infiniti names Geneva-bound range-extended sports car concept EMERG-E originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 14:30:00 EST.
The on-again, off-again Volkswagen BlueSport roadster is, well, on again according to EVO Magazine. The publication reportedly spoke with Uli Hackenberg, head of engineering with Volkswagen, who said the company's dealers are mistaken when they say there won't be a market for a vehicle like the BlueSport. Hakenberg said that the rise of hardware like the Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ, alongside the upcoming next-generation Mazda MX-5 suggests buyers are once again willing to put down cash on an entry-level sports car. Throw in the fact that the dollar is regaining strength and European vehicles start to look even more competitive in the Land of the Free. Despite this, recent reports have indicated that the BlueSport's planned sibling at Porsche has been delayed, and its other planned sibling, the Audi R4, is understood to have been canceled back in May.

As a result, Volkswagen is reportedly going to ask its dealers to once again gauge demand for a mid-engine convertible. The roadster will need to see sales estimates of at least 50,000 units worldwide in order to get the go-ahead from corporate. Even if that happens, it will likely be a good three years before we see the production model touch down. Maestro, cue up the sad trombone if you would be so kind.
Volkswagen BlueSport roadster still on-track after all? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Feb 2012 14:02:00 EST.
Things are shaping up nicely for next week's Chicago Auto Show, key among them this new Kia concept called Track'ster. Riffing on the Korean automaker's hit Soul compact, the Track'ster keeps much of the small car's boxy style, but turns the wick up considerably by scrubbing the rear doors, fitting a gaping front end, substituting massive showcar wheels and dramatically lowering the right height.

This isn't the first time Kia has toyed with the idea of a Soul spinoff - at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, it presented the Soul'ster, a rough-and-tumble concept vehicle with a small pickup bed. Thanks to a strong response from the public, the Soul'ster was understood to be under consideration for production, but its hopes reportedly fizzled due to the economic meltdown.

Despite being on the market since 2008, the Soul continues to pick up momentum in chunks. Thanks in part to a refresh for 2012 that addresses hopes for more powerful drivetrains, the Soul has emerged as one of Kia's best sellers - last month, it was only slightly outdistanced by the Optima midsize sedan, and it's outpacing Sorrento, which was Kia's best-seller last year.

Will Kia finally pull the trigger on a Soul variant? We should know more after the Track'ster makes the show circuit rounds.
Kia renders Track'ster concept for Chicago originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Feb 2012 09:58:00 EST.
Love it or hate it, the automotive industry of today is not lacking for its exercises in reviving old nameplates. The trend ranges from Mini to Maybach, from Dodge Dart to Dodge Challenger. And the French are certainly not immune. Citroën revived its fabled DS moniker for a range of premium hatchbacks, and Renault - most of all - has been mulling bringing back the Alpine for years now.

Arguably just as central to Renault's performance heritage as the recently revived Gordini line, Alpine made mid-engined sportscars with Renault mechanicals starting in the 1950s and discontinued four decades later. Its most famous model, however, was the A110 (pictured above), which is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. And if a new report from Autocar is accurate, Renault has no intention of letting the occasion slip by unnoticed.

In fact, the French automaker is reportedly planning an Alpine concept car to unveil at the Paris Motor Show next fall. But the question remains whether there's any production potential with such a concept. The French are known for producing some rather intriguing show cars - sportscars in particular - that never seem to get very far from the show stand, from the GTbyCitroën to the Renault DeZir.

Whether Renault can make the business case - without the North American market, at that - to take on the sports car establishment remains to be seen, but having the Nissan product bin to raid certainly couldn't hurt.
Renault planning 50th anniversary Alpine tribute concept for Paris originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 17:31:00 EST.
One very unusual electric car has debuted in Brussels. The Hiriko EV uses a hub-mounted electric motor at each wheel, though that's not the most interesting aspect of the vehicle. According to The Telegraph, the Hiriko uses an interesting rear suspension design that allows the vehicle to fold up, rotating the cabin vertically, to take up less space while parking. The partnership behind the vehicle say the car consumes approximately one third the parking space of a Smart ForTwo. Occupants enter from a single front door, and the Hiriko ditches the traditional steering wheel in favor of a joystick.

The vehicle is set to begin production in Spain next year, and the partnership behind the vehicle's development aims to use several European and American cities as testbeds for the bubble machine. The two-seater has been co-developed by a collection of Basque businesses, the Spanish government and the MIT media lab (you may remember the concept, from 2007). A total of 20 test vehicles are currently being built, and each vehicle is said to cost $16,253 to manufacture. No final price tag has been set, nor are there solid details on range, power or charge times.
Hiriko folding electric car headed for production originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 08:00:00 EST.
The Mini Rocketman (we'll spare you the Elton John lyrics) was one of our favorite concepts from the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Sure, the name is silly, but this pint-sized concept showed what could be in store for an even more mini Mini. A smarter Smart, if you will. However, a new report from CAR states that the entry-level Mini project has allegedly been canned. The Rocketman as we know it has been grounded.

The reason? CAR reports that it would be a costly endeavor to develop the Rocketman to meet street-legal specifications; specifically, handling, stability and crash standards. The concept only measures in at 134.6 inches long - a full 12 inches shorter than a standard Cooper hatchback, and while Mini insiders said that a production version could come as early as 2016, there are now no plans to offer a vehicle smaller than the current Cooper.
Mini Rocketman reportedly canned originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 15:29:00 EST.
Last Summer Toyota showed off its Window to the World technology created in partnership with the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design. It turned a rear window into an augmented-reality screen that would keep kids interested in something other than asking "Are we there yet?" Now General Motors has showed off a similar bit of kit called Windows of Opportunity, developed with the Bezalel School of Art and Design in Israel.

GM's Windows concept is aimed just as much at kids as adults. The team came up with four different apps that provided interactivity ranging from a virtual take on drawing on foggy windows to checking what was on other augmented windows on cars around the world. We're probably a long way from seeing something like this in production, but you know you can look forward to the day when your kid monitors your driving style from his child seat. Follow the jump for the full press release and a short video on GM's new tech.
Continue reading GM latest to explore turning rear windows into screens

GM latest to explore turning rear windows into screens originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 10:33:00 EST.
The Geneva Motor Show never fails to deliver when it comes to concept cars. Unveiled alongside the latest production models, concepts represent a way for automakers to showcase where their heads are at and where they want to be going in the future. But it's not always automakers that present the concepts. Sometimes they come from design houses like Pininfarina.

These independent styling studios and engineering firms have come into some trouble lately as the automakers that used to contract their services for a variety of applications are increasingly relying on in-house departments. But Pininfarina has been resilient. Where others have closed, Pininfarina soldiers on. And this is its latest design.

Called the Cambiano after the town in which the company is based, this design study was first teased with a solitary cropped frontal image released on Facebook. Now a little over a week later, Pininfarina has released two more, showing part of the side in profile and the top from above. We'll have to wait a little longer to see more, but from what we've seen so far, the Cambiano has our interests suitably piqued.
Pininfarina Cambiano concept comes into focus with two more images originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 18:58:00 EST.
A Black Knight stalks the ramparts of corporate castles, he carries a shield decorated with a wreath of beans, he swings a double-edged spreadsheet and he rides a terrifying black mare called The Bottom Line. His name is The Business Case and if a new report from Autocar is accurate, he's done his foul work again, this time dealing another blow to the already-long-delayed Volkswagen Bluesport Roadster. Even though the engineering work for the two-seater convertible is reportedly finished, it appears no one can come up with a way to support the necessary sales projections of 50,000 units annually.

That is in part because Jonathan Browning, head of VW USA, apparently doesn't see the point of expanding VW's product portfolio with another model (a truly unexpected sentiment coming from Volkswagen as far as we're concerned). The U.S. being the largest consumer of sports cars, our sitting this one out puts the 2009 Detroit Auto Show showcar in a tough spot.

Synergies being what they are, that also puts Bluesport's brand brothers from Audi and Porsche in doubt. Audi plans for an R4 will apparently get iced in light of the news, but Porsche might have dodged a bullet: it wanted a four-cylinder 550-successor, but not one that would eat into Boxster sales, which this car almost certainly would. The Bluesport isn't officially dead yet, but at three years in and counting, you can be sure there's a hand on the life-support plug.
VW Bluesport Roadster might finally be dead before it lived originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 18:40:00 EST. Tucked away in the way-way-back of the South Hall at CES is Garmin's private meeting room. One section holds the company's current automotive, nautical and aviation systems, while the other is an exhibition of the future.

We sampled Garmin's new "Everest" setup, which includes one-shot voice commands and the ability to buy tracks from Amazon while you're listening to them over FM radio. You'll see it in cars later this year. We also sampled their "In2it" eight-way rotary controller (think a tech'd-out iDrive, MMI or COMAND knob), complete with proximity sensors and configurable buttons. Garmin is pitching it to OEMs right now.

But the system that blew our mind is dubbed K2. And the only thing we can show you is the image above.
We can't tell you how many times we've each been asked about concept cars, "Why can't I buy one of those?" Well you can. Not often, mind you, and not cheaply. But every once in a while, one of those glitzy concepts you see on a show stand comes up for sale. And now, it's time to grab your checkbooks.

The show car (or truck, to be precise) you see here was the centerpiece of the Ford display at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show. Dubbed the F-150 Lightning Rod, it takes the formula employed by the SVT Lightning to a more stylized extent, with a chopped roofline and raked windshield, flush-fitted neon head- and tail-lights, and a minimalist interior. The whole package is finished in metallic red with a tribal tattoo motif. A 5.4-liter SOHC V8 sat under the hood, mated to a four-speed automatic. The 21-inch aluminum wheels wear tires whose tread is cut to match the tattoo pattern.

This unique concept truck is expected to fetch around $50,000 when it crosses the block at the RM Auctions event in Arizona next week, but while it's in proper running condition, it isn't certified to drive on public streets. Check it out the listing after the jump and browse the attached photo gallery.
Continue reading 2001 Ford F-150 Lightning Rod Concept up for grabs at RM Auctions

2001 Ford F-150 Lightning Rod Concept up for grabs at RM Auctions originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 15 Jan 2012 19:01:00 EST.

Filed under: Concept Cars, Detroit Auto Show, Ford, Lexus, Design/Style

Every year at the Detroit Auto Show, the Eyes on Design awards honors the best designs among production vehicles and concepts debuting that year. Unlike, say, the North American International Car and Truck of the Year awards, the only vehicles eligible for an Eyes on Design award are the ones that introduce themselves to the world - well, really just North America - in Detroit.

What's particularly interesting is that the judges for these two awards (one for production vehicles and the other for concepts) are all active or retired designers themselves, so they know a little something about the topic. This year's group includes, among others, Volkswagen head of design Walter de Silva, President and CEO of SRT Ralph Gilles, and GM Vice President of Global Design Ed Welburn.

This year, the Eyes on Design awards were handed out to the 2013 Ford Fusion in the production category and the Lexus LF-LC in the concept category. The Fusion's fellow finalists were the 2013 BMW 3 Series and 2013 Cadillac ATS, while the LF-LC eked out a W over the Chevrolet Tru 140S and Lincoln MKZ.
Ford Fusion, Lexus LF-LC win Eyes on Design awards originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 18:01:00 EST.

Filed under: Concept Cars, CES, Technology, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury, Infotainment

Not to be outdone by its competitors from Ingolstadt, Mercedes-Benz brought out its own vision of the future of interiors, complete with augmented reality, a fully customizable dashboard and gesture-based controls. There's not a knob or button to be found...

The video after the jump demonstrates the Dynamic & Intuitive Control Experience (DICE) far better than words can convey, but the basic elements are these: a series of proximity sensors detect hand motions across the interior, allowing you to scroll, select and control a variety of functions. The highlights include the ability to get information about the businesses and sights around you, connect with friends nearby and control all the standard music and navigation functionality you'd expect in a high-end ride. But it's not without its issues.

The major problem is there's no way for the system to detect if you're motioning or just have your hand out, and making matters worse is the poor definition of exactly where your hands and arms should be to take control of specific elements. But Mercedes has time to work out the kinks - one exec admitted that a production version is at least 20 years out.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz DICE concept brings gesture controls to the cockpit [w/video]

Mercedes-Benz DICE concept brings gesture controls to the cockpit [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 17:01:00 EST.
Want to know how highly regarded the multiple-award winning Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is? At the recent Auto Expo in Delhi, India Maruti Suzuki showed a concept that is, to our eyes, extraordinarily reminiscent of the small English SUV - although we'll readily admit the glasshouse is a tweaked version of the current Suzuki Swift.

Called the XA Alpha concept, some reports say that it's underpinned by the Swift platform, while others report that the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy off-roader, based on the Jimny, provides the chassis. For comparison purposes, the XA is just a few inches shorter and narrower than an Evoque, but the same height as the Evoque four-door.

Plans for production are said to rest with audience reception, which appears to have - understandably - been quite positive. If and when a production version does arrive, you can probably kiss the suicide doors goodbye, but it is predicted to be offered with four-wheel drive and "a range of K-Series petrol engines and 1.3-liter DDIS engine." Click the link for more photos of the flexible Indian flyer.
Suzuki shows Concept XA trucklet in Delhi originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 07:59:00 EST.
There's virtually no end to the list of automakers for which Pininfarina has designed over the years. But every once in a while, the stoic Italian studio works up a project just for itself. And this is one such occasion.

So what is the occasion, you ask? The 30th anniversary of the company's Styling Centre, and the 10th anniversary of its Engineering Centre, which were founded in 1982 and 2002, respectively. The dual milestone is celebrated with the Cambiano concept car.

Named for the town in which Pininfarina is based, the Cambiano is an environmentally friendly sport sedan concept which the company will unveil at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March. That's about all we have to go on at the moment, revealed on the studio's Facebook page along with the teaser image above. Watch this space for more as the Swiss expo approaches.
Pininfarina previews Geneva-bound Cambiano concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 18:31:00 EST.
It might have been a worthy successor to the Pontiac Vibe - a stylish, youth-marketed crossover - but alas, the GMC Granite may never come to be. Jim Federico, GM's small car exec, told Automotive News that the Granite concept from the 2010 Detroit auto show isn't headed into production.

Granite was rumored to be green-lighted for production, and would have been based on the Chevrolet Cruze platform, to compete with vehicles like the Scion xB and Kia Soul. We liked the concept when we saw it in 2010, but felt that the Granite was perhaps a bad match for GMC, given its small size.

While AN says Federico offered no further details, we imagine GM figures the forthcoming Buick Encore crossover probably doesn't need the competition in Buick/GMC showrooms.
GMC Granite is dead originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 14:30:00 EST.
