What Does Your Rental Contract Say?

Although renting a vehicle for your upcoming trip may seem like a simple task, there is more to it then calling around to get the lowest price. When looking for a car it is important to realize that just because you are getting the best rate from one company, it does not always mean that it is the best deal available.

Each quote that you receive is considered a base rate. This is the rate for the rental only and does not include any taxes or additional fees that will be added on. Many times a renter is not aware of these added fees until they arrive to pick up the rental, and it is at this time that they realize they have to pay more than they budgeted for. When receiving your rental quotes be sure to ask about the amount of surcharges and taxes that will be added to the base rate. Even if you are contacting various rental centers each will will have different taxes and different surcharges so don’t think that one location is the same as the next. Call all the rental car companies that will be in the vicinity of where you are renting your car.

On top of the taxes and surcharges there are also the charges for mileage. Most car rental agreements come with an allotted amount of miles per rental period or week. If you happen to go over these miles then there will be extra charges added to your bill. If you have a choice, I would recommended you pay the few extra dollars up front for the unlimited mileage. This may seem like a non essential aspect to your rental but the amount that you will pay for unlimited mileage will save you much more should you not take it and go over the allotted miles. You will also have a more relaxing trip by not having to worry how far you are traveling and not going over the miles.

Of course, there is also the issue of rental insurance, and although the vehicle should be covered by using your credit card and your own car insurance policy, it is a good idea to check this information out before hand, especially if you are traveling internationally because your vehicle insurance policy may not cover you while you are driving elsewhere. But if you are assured that you have coverage, don’t pay for the extra insurance as you will wind up paying a lot more for the overall vehicle rental.

These are just some of the things that rental car agencies will try and pick up extra money from. Each car rental company is different and therefore each rental agreement will be different as well. Be sure to read the agreement carefully before signing it. The extra time you spend reading it before hand can save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
