The Skills You Will Need When Taking Driving Lessons
Some people who are learning to drive can become quit nervous. The person teaching the driving can become equally nervous. Lets imagine you have a nervous parent, can you imagine how nervous that parent will be while you are driving? You will probably end up with a nervous parent screaming, shouting, and just flat out freaking out. I am a nervous mother so I am speaking from experience.
Experience is an important teacher when learning to drive. Your skills will become sharper the more time you spend driving a car in different types of conditions. Once your skills are honed it will be easier for you to keep calm while driving and be more prepared to deal with a difficult situation.
Getting a feel for the car is the first thing you want to do, so driving in an empty parking lot is a good place to start. You will want to practice your turning, and braking to learn how the car you are driving handles. Once you have mastered the basics such as driving, reversing, and braking then you can move on to the back roads to practice some more skills.
Back roads tend to have less traffic so they are usually safer for you and any other cars on the road. You want to be safe while you are learning techniques like slowing down for curves, coming to complete stops at all stop signs, following at a safe distance, turning left on two lane roads, and going uphill while at a constant speed.
After you have mastered all of these basic skills, then it is time to practice your driving skills on bigger, and busier roads. You will need to learn how to change lanes properly, merge into traffic, maintain a safe speed, and using on and off ramps. These are only a few of the things you will need to learn of course.
It is very important that you learn to anticipate and watch for potential problems from other motorist. You should always watch for cars that switch lanes without signaling or pull out in front of you. It can be hard as a new driver to anticipate other drivers actions or how much speed and space a certain situation will call for. Do not worry these safety habits will develop over time with experience.
Once you are comfortable with the skills you have learned while practicing then it is time to drive in different conditions. You could start with driving in the early morning or late evening when the sun is glaring off the windshield. This is a dangerous time to drive and needs to be mastered. You could also practice driving at nighttime while you vision is limited. Also you will need to practice in different weather such as rain or snow, it is important to learn how to drive at a safe speed on slick roads.
Don’t take off alone just yet, you will probably want to learn some basic maintenance necessities first such as: how to change a tire; pumping gas; jump starting a car; and checking the tires air pressure. Now you have all the skills necessary for driving. Always remember to buckle up, adjust your mirrors and seat, and always obey traffic laws and safety rules. Driving is a great experience but can go terribly wrong very quickly when the traffic laws and safety rules are not followed.

Joan,
Ouch! on the Drivers Ed experience! I vividly (and I do mean VIVIDLY) remember lying on my back on our high school stage my junior year, waiting for theatre class to commence, talking to my friends in all seriousness….. “Why on earth would we paint the ceiling orange? It's gonna be a nightmare to light! It throws a shadow on the back of the proscenium. What were they thinking?” Uh, Paula, it's not. “Um. Oh. S*#t.” Ooops. Dropped a tad to early, perhaps? Then trying not to laugh hysterically for the next 45 minutes, after which we escaped with guitars, beer and frisbees up the River Road to the park. We should not have been anywhere near a steering wheel, either. Young and crazy? Yep. Happy? Tremendously!
