2008 Fuel Economy Comparison: Prius v Jetta v Focus v Smart

www.edmunds.com New 2009 Fuel : www.youtube.com These days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now! We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter “TDI” diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota .

  1. well obiously the prius or the smart car makes you look like a fag if your a guy and driving one… focus is nice but bad gas mileage, compared to the three, so its clear that the tdi is the best…

  2. @SSTTEEAALLTTHH Two words… it’s fun. It’s got nothing to do with the size of your dick, but if you’re gonna buy a car that’s great on fuel (none of these cars are exactly chevy V8′s) you might as well still be able to enjoy it. Besides, I don’t think the Jetta is better “just because it pulls quickly”; I agree if someone bought a car 100% of that reason then they’re an idiot but that’s not at all my position.

  3. @tnralliart2600

Why? There are speed limits, what good is it to by a car that can drive faster then the speed limit? If all cars can reach the speed limits, than i’d look at stuff other than which one is the fastest to decide which car to buy, things you can actually use without being a danger on the rod and risking fines.
Not saying there is anything wrong with a Jetta but buying a car just because it pulls quickly is stupid and smells of compensating behavior…

  4. The 2010 smart fortwo CDI took the world record for “world’s most fuel efficient production vehicle” and “lowest CO2 emitting production vehicle”.

It gets about 94mpg and half the CO2 of a Prius…Why don’t we have these in America????????

It even has more torque than the gas smart!

  5. @posro1988 Nope and I hate the EPA because of it too…

  6. this is a petrol smart, right? has diesel one came to US yet?

  7. @Phunker1 that’s because europe rules!!!

  8. It’s funny how they said there were no real winners, yet in the end of the video, the Prius was the first one parked closest to the camera :)

  9. @passngas2 Honestly I had a valid point which was, “why not buy a base challenger for the same money?” Then I got into a ridiculous argument with a retard

  10. @surethang27 This is almost an unfair argument. the 6.1 liter engine only makes 190 more ft./lbs, than the 1.9 turbo diesel. Compare the Challengers engine to say a Cummins or Duramax for a fair challenge, and, well, the diesels kick your Challengers ass all day long.

  11. And lets not forget, the Jetta TDI was 4 years old when they did this test, the others were brand-new! And whoever says diesels are boring to drive is smoking crack, seriously.

  12. in europe the diesel is cheaper then gasolin si here jetta wins

  13. @toyotaprius79

How can you know about whats a fun car if your defending the prius?

  14. @tnralliart2600 it’s a diesel, diesel cars are no fun, no fast and no where near cool

  15. I also forgot that I meant 56mpg US (highway) for the 2011 fortwo…Take that Prius…

  16. None of the smart’s stats matter anymore. When Mercedes/Renault/Nissan created a partnership they upgraded the fortwo’s engine (among other aspects that people complained about). Through real world testing in Europe it gets 56mpg US. This is without reducing performance.

The whole spec sheet is available at Daimler’s news site:

    daimler(dot)media(dot)com

  17. @GarrettKeetley Perhaps you could look the specs up instead of arguing with me because you are sadly mistaken. The SRT Challenger has a 6.1 litre engine! The huge size means it makes gobs of torque! Much more torque than a turbo 1.9 litre!

  18. @surethang27 i don’t hate challengers or anything, im just saying the jetta would have more torque

  19. @GarrettKeetley i hate u. look up the specs

  20. @surethang27 no, inline turbodiesels would create more torque

  21. @GarrettKeetley U have to be messing with me right? Challenger has more torque too. About 190lb-ft more than the Jetta

  22. @surethang27 ok, it might have more hp, but the tdi has more torque

  23. @GarrettKeetley The Challenger has WAY more power. The SRT model has 425 horsepower.

  24. @surethang27 the TDI probably has more power than the challenger

  25. did you notice that the jetta tdi is the oldest car there? even though its a few years older than the other cars, it still got better highway mpg’s, i’d take the jetta tdi because their torque masters

  26. Not true with the Ford Fiesta I did some long distance driving in, including motorways, A-roads and city driving. Manufacturers claim is 45mpg combined. On a 300 mile trip of motorways and A-roads I got 35mpg from it. Otherwise it averaged around 28-30 mpg. Most cars I’ve driven have returned 75% of the manufacturer’s claims.

  27. Skoda for ever….

  28. “If you drive your car carefully” that’s the key. I hate people with a Prius who look down on others for not having the most economical car one can get, but then they floor it coming out of the garage…morons

  29. and our survey says … lol

  30. testing mpgs with 4 people in the car is a retarded waste of time

  31. Dacia is the best! :D

  32. @yoseb92 australian people are shit

  33. australian people shit on americans.

  34. Australia what?

  35. Australia, mate.

  36. Volvo for life:D
swedish cars is the best cars ever made:D

  37. I hate the guy that says that he would buy a car for its brand name. You buy a car depending on how good it is, that’s how a car company gets its reputation.

  38. @jpmahone thank you

  39. @AdrianC12345 America is shite, such a disgusting money obsessed greed ridden culture. Not saying that you are like this but pop culture certainly is and its pretty sad how carried away your capitalist system has become. Gotta look after the needy not the rich. I live in New Zealand we look after each other. And gun ownership, fundamentalist Christians, Intelligent design in school….. yikes, don’t even get me started

  40. @armenchik619 so true. America is naaasty

  41. i drove my veyron the other day and was surprised to have 40.4L/100 km…
    i usually get 55-70L/100 km highway? driving at 150 km/h at 2,200 rpm…

  42. why do you think that you have the right to say shit like that?

  43. So, why is America shit? Huh? Do you live in a better country? Where?

  44. And you live in what country?

  45. @AdrianC12345 america’s shit, thats alll u need to know.

  46. VOLVO !!!!!

  47. Volvo FTW!! Skoda blows chunks!

  48. UK Gallon is 4.5 litres and US Gallon is 3.7. That’s part of the reason of the high MPG :) . Plus those are diesel cars and specifically designed for low fuel consumption – e.g. improved areo dynamics.

  49. Wow, here in the US we get claims about cars getting 30-40 mpg, and in europe 80?!

  50. as much as i like volvo i’d take the skoda.
