Auto shops push for the right to repair all cars

— when Mary Burke recently took her 2007 with its worn-out ignition switch to her regular repair shop, the mechanic didn’t have the software to fix the problem.

The shop’s owner, Glenn Wilder, said he had to take Burke’s car to a Honda dealership — because those are the only places Honda releases the computer software he needed. Burke said she paid much more for the repair than she would have at Wilder’s shop and was without her car for a day.

“I was totally frustrated and upset with the whole situation and the way Honda had a stranglehold on how Glenn had to do it,” said Burke, who lives in Marshfield, 30 miles southeast of Boston.

Now mom-and-pop repair shops like Wilder Brothers in Scituate are pushing a bill that would require auto manufacturers to provide, at a price, all the diagnostic and software information they make available to their dealerships.

Massachusetts would become the first state to approve the so-called auto right-to-repair law. The Senate recently passed it, and it’s pending in the House. Industry observers say passage of the bill in Massachusetts could drive similar legislative efforts in other states.

and manufacturers, including Honda, have vigorously opposed the right-to-repair bill on the federal level and in other states, such as new Jersey and Arizona. They say the push for the bill isn’t about consumers but about auto parts.

A spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an association of 11 vehicle manufacturers including Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor co. and General Motors co., said aftermarket parts companies are seeking information that would enable them to make inexpensive parts in foreign countries without incurring research and development costs.

“This is a thinly veiled attempt by parts manufacturers to lower the cost of remanufacturing original equipment of manufacturer parts,” alliance spokesman Charles Territo said. “Once this information is released, that intellectual property will be in China by the end of the month.”

But supporters of the bill say it’s about giving consumers choices.

“Consumers pay a lot of money for cars, and they should be able to choose where they can get them repaired,” said Art Kinsman, spokesman for the right to Repair Coalition, which represents more than 1,000 Massachusetts mechanics supporting the legislation.

  1. Honda isn't making the Element line. Hope they keep making parts.

  2. honda is a better build car.

  3. I got a nice 1997 Toyota Camry at the Honda Dealership on South 27th for 5K, it had 70K miles on it. That, however, was just nice timing.

I would reccommend a Toyota or Honda. I had a VW Jetta and the repairs were quite expensive at the end of it's life.

I also hear that bicycles are a great way to stay in shape and keep the gas costs down…

    Good luck!

  10. Up to four transmitters may be programmed to one remote control door lock receiver. A transmitter may be programmed to more than one vehicle if the remote keyless entry systems are similar. All of the transmitters (maximum of 4 total per receiver) must be programmed at the same time in order for all of the transmitters to function properly.

Important: Leave a window down in the vehicle while reprogramming the remote control door lock receiver system. The above action will prevent unintentional lock out if the reprogramming procedure is not performed properly.

Turn the ignition to the OFF position.

Jump the 2 terminals located in the program ground connector (4) in order to ground the receiver program terminal.
The following conditions indicate that the module is ready to be programmed:

    • The door locks will lock.

    • The door locks will unlock.

    • The rear compartment lid release will cycle.

    • The horn chirp will sound.

    • The above conditions should occur within 2 seconds.

Press and hold the LOCK and the UNLOCK buttons simultaneously until the following conditions occur:
    • The door locks lock.

    • The door locks unlock.

    • The rear compartment lid release releases.

    • The horn chirp sounds.

    • The above conditions should occur in approximately 12 seconds. The above conditions verify successful transmitter reprogramming.

Perform the previous step for each of the remaining transmitters.
Remove the jumper at the program connector.
Verify the proper operation of each transmitter.

  13. Well, I can't be positive that it will be the fix because I don't know your symptoms… but a good start would be to change the sensor on the EGR. I have seen them go bad before and it is relatively cheap and easily removed and replaced. Should be about 20-30 bucks.
