SAN ANTONIO — According to San Antonio Police, July is one of the highest auto theft months of the year. most people are more active during the summer and thieves are no exception, so police are reminding car owners to take extra precautions.”Any vehicle that’s easy prey will be taken,” Deputy Chief Ray Torres, with the San Antonio Police Department’s investigations division, said. “I mean, I wouldn’t take a chance.”In June, the top 10 stolen vehicles in San Antonio were:
Torres said it doesn’t matter how old your car is, since most cars are stolen and broken down for parts. he said no matter what you drive, you should always hide your belongings and lock your car. he said even vehicles with alarms are vulnerable.Brenda Washington, an SUV owner, said, “You think with an alarm system that’s more than enough, but I was just informed that thieves know house to disconnect that pretty easily.”Washington said she had the VIN number of her truck etched onto every window, courtesy of the San Antonio Police Department.Torres said VIN number etchings are a deterrent for thieves, since those vehicles can be tracked easier.he said the best deterrent is a GPS tracking systems, although they are expensive. he said prevention is also a good deterrent. Car owner should always hide belongings, lock their cars, and never leave keys in the ignition..Torres said 50 percent of vehicles are stolen using the owner’s keys. Many times people will leave the keys in the ignition with the car running.”You’ll never know who’s just standing in the wings and just waiting for the opportunity to take that vehicle,” Torres said.It’s also illegal to leave your car unattended with keys inside, Torres said. Consumer's reports have been the best source of information for me over the years. I agree that foreign cars are more reliable than american ones. My new 2007 Toyota Camry rides well, gets good mileage and was reviewed as very reliable. I had a Ford once and vowed I would never buy an American car again after having lots of trouble with the Ford.
“…once it damages the joint its self, then its a more costly repair…” Not necessarily true, just buy a new drive axle and pop it in. I got new drive axles for my Toyota for $75 Each. I love how car service people blow the cost of a repair to? the moon when its not that hard or expensive to do it yourself. Went for inspection, $50 to replace a $3 exhaust gasket, did the job myself in less than 10 minutes and passed the inspection.
