BMW’s concept car ActiveHybrid 5 this week at Geneva
BMW is set to give the world a preview of their gasoline-electric concept hybrid this week at the Geneva Motor Show. The luxury carmaker will showcase the ActiveHybrid 5 Concept side by side with the 6-cylinder and V8 models.
The concept car ActiveHybrid 5 has under its hood a sophisticated hybrid setup that involves a 6-cylinder gasoline direct injected and twin turbocharged engine paired with a lithium ion battery dependent electric motor.
The electric motor of this green car registers 54 horsepower and is linked to the gasoline engine via a special clutch. When the driver hits the brakes or when the car is coasting, the electric motor will be activated as a generator to charge the batteries.
The hybrid system is similar to the setup of the ActiveHybrid 7 where the electric motor is paired with a V8. According to BMW designers, the technology allows one to save about 10% of fuel and it also permits all-electric driving in the city streets. It also makes use of a stop-start technology to save more fuel. Weather control is also controlled by the battery and does not depend on the engine.
BWM also linked the navigation system with the software that controls the consumption of energy of the motor, battery, and the engine. The car may for example depend on the battery more when cruising down a downhill route and the system is designed to recharged it as it passes on that section of the road.
BMW has not released any figures about fuel economy or power outputs but expect for updates as soon as we hear about them.

The sad thing is that there isn't any othr way to get it cheaper. The only other ways I can think of are borrowing the sam DVD from someone who owns a BMW with Navigation or buying the DVD off eBay. Yes there are a few people who have sold Navigation DVD's for BMW off eBay but I wouldn't trust that.
You're probably going to have to go the full 9 yards and get it from the dealership because you can't copy the program. If you don't want to buy it you can wait because if I recall, BMW sends you new DVD's every so often with updates to the road mappings.
What makes me crazy is this, “Note that ethanol contains less energy per liter or gallon. So you need a third or a half more ethanol to drive the same distance as you can with pure gasoline.”
That is only true if you are trying to use a gasoline engine or a 'flex fuel' engine. Ethanol has a much higher octane rating, allowing it to prevent auto-igniting up to compression ratios of 19/1 (instead of gasolines 11/1).
Why does nobody ever mention that? Argh!
Just spotted a really cool concept car thing
the terms are used interchangeably, but there is technically a difference however its just one of those things.
From Wiki
An engine is a mechanical device that produces some form of output from a given input. When the purpose of an engine is to produce mechanical power from a fuel source it is referred to as a prime mover; alternatively, a motor is a device which produces mechanical power from other forms of energy (such as electricity, a flow of hydraulic fluid, or compressed air). An automobile makes use of several motors to start the car and drive the car's various pumps (fuel, power steering, etc) – but the power plant that propels the car is called an engine. The term 'motor' was originally used to distinguish the new internal combustion engine -powered vehicles from earlier vehicles powered by a steam engine (as in steam roller and motor roller).

Honda has been making improvements to their motors, if you notice a motor they have made for quite awhile is a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder. However unlike some manufacturers Honda actually refines their motors so that the thinner oil is all they need because of quality control and tight tolerances. Anyways it is usually a pretty good idea to use the oil specified in your manual because again the manufacturer knows more about the motor than a 12 year old on line.
