When people decide to build a structure to protect their vehicle they need to choose between adding a garage or a carport to their existing dwelling. Before making this decision you should compare and contrast the benefits and drawbacks of each type of structure. The two different types of structures have a number of similarities and a number of differences.

Either structure can be built as a standalone detached structure or can be attached to the existing dwelling. Think about which type would serve you better. If you intend to store your daily use vehicle then an attached structure might suit you better. If there is a pre-existing side door to your home by which you could access the new structure then even better. If you intend to store your RV and not use it for a number of months then a detached structure might be best. Carports and garages can be made out of similar materials. They are quite often constructed from wood. However, there are also masonry carports and garages. Both structures have similar roof structures. Either structure can have a flat, single slope, shed or gable roof. As a general rule attached carports tend to have single slope roofs or flat roofs. Detached garages tend to have either a shed or gable roof. However, despite those general rules the roof selection is shared.

So what are the differences between carports and garages? The two biggest differences are cost and security. Carports are less expensive to construct for the obvious reasons. Carports do not require materials for walls nor do they require windows or doors. On the other hand, carports are less secure as a result. If you need to be able to lock and leave then you need to build a garage.

As is set out in the preceding paragraphs, carports and garages have a lot in common. They share roof lines and choices of materials. You can contract the entire job out or you can build it yourself.
